Design of a high-strength chrome moly steel shaft for the salvaged propeller of the steamship Indiana on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.
The work included designing a flanged connection at the end of the shaft to connect to the existing section of shaft remaining in the propeller hub. As the propeller display is designed to rotate the shaft and propeller for extended periods, dynamic forces and anticipated fatigue stresses due to the rotation were included in the parameters for the connection design.
Brandon Rossetti coordinated extensively with the Smithsonian Institution and their contractor during the design, fabrication, and installation of the shaft and propeller.
